I am not sure what inspired this painting. I had bought some Nupastel Color Sticks and had never tried them. After receiving a mega order of cradled boards from Dick Blicks, I was inspired to try something new. First I grabbed a black color stick and created the background. This picture stinks. You can't really see how the chalk looks with the woodgrain showing through. I then added some grass. It doesn't look like much at this point, but this is when ideas started flowing. I roughed in a dragobfly and added some more grass. This is where I got stuck. The title "Dance with me in the moonlight" came to me quickly. I just couldn't decide how to portray that. So I went to bed. I had also had a couple of glasses of wine and was sleepy at this point. As soon as I opened my eyes this morning I thought "ballerina legs". What? You don't wake up thinking of ballerina legs? Yea, as a rule I don't either. It is certainly not like I have ever donned a pair of slippers, but I knew it would fit with what I was trying to convey. Here is the final painting. Using color sticks was a lot of fun. I used them alone and on top of acrylic paint. It gave me the soft look I was going for. I had to seal it a gazillion times throughout the process. I used graphite as well. I'll leave you with an important lesson I learned. When working with chalk, before sealing. Do not lean your boobies on the board while doing detail work. They are awesome blending tools, however, I now have a white tanktop with a green boobie area.
