Christmas is over and now the only thing to look forward to is the snowy cold days of winter. Unless... do you feel like having some fun? Come over to my Altered Book - Mixed Media Workshop and sign up for 3 days of fun! We are going to create a funky little book to give to the one you love on Valentine Day, or maybe just a little special something for someone you love.
These little books are loads of fun to make. You don't have to be an artist. This is for everyone. We aren't going to use expensive supplies. Most of the stuff you find laying around the house, or someone else's ;-) We'll start on a Friday and finish up on Sunday. Come on over and check it out. Don't be left out of all of the fun. I just wanted to take a minute to send you all some Christmas wishes. My wish for you is:
- you are safe and warm with plenty of food in the fridge -you are surrounded by loved ones -you set petty differences aside and enjoy the day -your heart is happy and full of love -you quit worrying if you bought enough -the stress of the economy can be set aside for one day of joy and thankfulness -you hug all your family and friends and tell them that you love them -you remember why we are celebrating this day It sounds so simple, but there are many people out there who just want to be warm, fed and loved. I for one feel blessed beyond words for all my family and friends! I can't think of anything else I really need. Oh, yes.... there is one thing... that flippin' Kindle Fire that has been taunting me all week from the mantle!!!! Merry Christmas :-) I dabble in the creation of jewelry from time to time. I sold a necklace to a co-worker a few weeks back. On it hung a pendant with a picture of an octopus. She wore it in front of her best friend, Nina Cunningham, who happens to be a well know artist in town. Nina did a sketch of an Octopus and posted it on FaceBook. I commented and said it had inspired me to try my hand at painting an octopus.... and the challenge began. Kelly Barton said she would join us, and so did Missie Bickel .
And that is how a challenge begins :-) It's really fun seeing all the different spins on one subject. I can't wait to see if Missie picks up a brush or crochets an octopus. Come join us. We are trying to have them completed by December 30th. I'll post the completed art here. Merry Christmas you all! Recently I ordered a set of Pigma micron pens. Not because I needed them, because I am addicted to art supplies and trying new things. Every bit of extra money I can scrape together goes towards this obsession. I was recently called an artoholic. True that Shari! True that!
Well now I have a REALLY big problem. I am addicted to using my new pens. I bought some watercolor paper, because my acrylic paper wasn't quite right, and began drawing. I have been doing my small random drawings. I can sit there for hours emersed in my drawing, ignoring housework, laundry, pets and husband. It's ok folks, he's used to that. He comes and checks on me every once in awhile to make sure I am still breathing. Yesterday when he checked on me he had a hefty trash bag in his hand. Ok, it was trash day. But I am thinking if I hadn't been breathing he was planning on stuffing me in there and setting me out by the road. Below are some of the drawings I have done lately. Don't worry when you look at them. I am sane. I just have a bit of craziness bouncing around up there and this is how I get it out. If I didn't draw and paint I would be flippin' nuts! You all have a great Labor Day weekend. I'll be up in Saugatuck, MI with all my favorite chickies. Good Times! Good Times! Peace Out :-) A few days ago I told you all I was taking an online workshop with Carla Sonheim, remember? I am pretending someone actually reads this. HaHa! Anyway... it has been fun. I got a little busy and failed to post anymore about it. Above is one of my finished pages. She walked us through various stages and in the end we come out the other side with the cutest little book made completely out of junk mai.l. In my case barrowed junk mail. After a few steps my book took shape. Here it is without any gesso or drawings. The idea is to draw on the pages and have the lines carry over onto the other pages. You then open up that page and continue on with another drawing. It's like a little puzzle. The workshop ended on Thursday. I am still working on mine because I am taking it kind of slow. This type of art is quite relaxing. There are no expectations. I am just kind of doodling and seeing where it takes me. Hmmm, that is pretty much the story of my life these days. I just kind of "doodle" and see where life takes me! You all have a laugh filled weekend.
Peace & Love, Sue Labor Day weekend is Witches' Weekend. You all didn't know that? This year 10 of us chickies are heading to Saugatuck, Michigan. First let me explain, we aren't really witches. We are at times witchy and bitchy, but we don't cast spells or dance naked around fires in the moonlight. Of course there are a few that tried to convince me there would be naked dancing and a sacrificial goat when I was invited for the first time. I think there might have been some ulterior motives at play, but I kept my clothes on and never saw a goat! Nice try Hatfield! The main group of gals' fall weekend getaway was lovingly dubbed Witches Weekend by Dianne's sweet hubby Dennis. The gals got together to go the Bridge Festival and he got the hell out of dodge. Last year we went to Gatlinburg, TN. There were 7 of us. This year there will be 10. Within that 10 there are those that have personal space issues, one who swears she will not leave the pool the entire weekend, a newly single chickie, one who loves to have some wine and sing songs about corn, whiskey and being frisky. One who exhibits the powers of a witch but only uses them for good, some artsy fartsies, a health inspector, a cop, (Oh shit!) and one who is so proud of her ass she will drop her pants with little or no encouragement. There has been a corn-hole tournament planned, meal planning is underway, and Saugatuck's webpage is being surfed to find art galleries and extracurricular activities. We'll leave husband's, jobs, kids, and troubles behind and embrace the fun and diverse personalities that we'll be surrounded with. Come on Labor Day Weekend, I am ready to go! 17 More Days :-) After reading the post above I am almost positive you would LOVE to help me have the most fun possible. Am I right? Peace & Love, Sue Day 1 was fun. The assignment was to draw some animals and other items with one line. That's right, never lift your pen! That was more difficult than it sounds. Do you see an elephant in the picture above? REALLY? Well then I guess I pulled it off. My guess is to get us to quit being so hung up on perfect lines and detail. But that is just a guess :-) I also gessoed a bunch of my borrowed junk mail. Maybe I'll give it back to kelly when I am done. It's bound to be more interesting.
I hope you all had a groovy kinda Monday. Peace, Sue It's Sunday night and I am looking forward to the week ahead. I still have to clean up dog poo, empty litter boxes, and walk my furry friends as usual. But this week I am taking an online workshop given by Carla Sonheim. It is entitled Junk Mail Artist's Book. I think there is still time to sign up. Surf on over and check it out.
Want to hear something funny? One of the items on the supply list is junk mail. Would you believe I have to stop by a friends and pick up some junk mail from her tomorrow. Can you believe that? We seem to be the house that junk mail forgot. Am I complaining? Hell No! One of the first things we had to do for class is draw some shapes or items that tend to show up a lot in our artwork. Thats was easy. I am a doodle queen. My worksheet is below. I'll probably blog throughout the class. Stop by and see what we are up to. Until then have a great Sunday evening. Peace out. I am not sure what inspired this painting. I had bought some Nupastel Color Sticks and had never tried them. After receiving a mega order of cradled boards from Dick Blicks, I was inspired to try something new. First I grabbed a black color stick and created the background. This picture stinks. You can't really see how the chalk looks with the woodgrain showing through. I then added some grass. It doesn't look like much at this point, but this is when ideas started flowing. I roughed in a dragobfly and added some more grass. This is where I got stuck. The title "Dance with me in the moonlight" came to me quickly. I just couldn't decide how to portray that. So I went to bed. I had also had a couple of glasses of wine and was sleepy at this point. As soon as I opened my eyes this morning I thought "ballerina legs". What? You don't wake up thinking of ballerina legs? Yea, as a rule I don't either. It is certainly not like I have ever donned a pair of slippers, but I knew it would fit with what I was trying to convey. Here is the final painting. Using color sticks was a lot of fun. I used them alone and on top of acrylic paint. It gave me the soft look I was going for. I had to seal it a gazillion times throughout the process. I used graphite as well. I'll leave you with an important lesson I learned. When working with chalk, before sealing. Do not lean your boobies on the board while doing detail work. They are awesome blending tools, however, I now have a white tanktop with a green boobie area. Yesterday was rather awesome, I must say. I messaged a few people from my favorite things page to let them know I gave them a shout out on my new webpage. Lesson learned: If you put goodness out into the universe it somes right back at you. Imagine that!
I received a thank you from Carla Sonheim , and the nicest message from Pixie Campbell. Pixie said ".I hope you soon discover why you're drawn to my work." I realized my caption beside her picture sounded a bit odd, but damnit, I am NOT sure why I am drawn to her work yet. When I figure it out I'll let you all know. Ok and get this, TheBloggess is now following ME on Twitter. How intimidating is that? A professional blogger following you. I guess I better step up my game when it comes to twitter. My tweets are neither deep or funny. Makes me feel a bit like a twit. As I was laying in bed watching tv with a small glow in my heart I received an email on my iPhone. I sold something on etsy. Really? What a day. Yes folks, I am a simple gal and it doesn't take much to make me happy. A small dog in the kennel jumping around happy to see me, lunch with a few of my favorite chickies, a kiss and hug from my folks, and a smile from my hubby did it for me today. I hope your day is as happy as mine. Peace, Sue |
